somatic gestalt therapy 〰️

My name is Amanda (she/her), a Gestalt therapist in training, somatic facilitator, and professional artist. I’m passionate about supporting my clients with where they feel stuck, overwhelmed or are living in pain. Together, we feel into where you are, and at your pace, begin to move towards growth, expanding awareness, and grounded support. I bring my lived experience as an artist to my approach as a therapist; I listen deeply, am fiercely curious, creative, rigorous in my thinking, collaborative, warm and compassionate.

I’m here to support the exploration of what is happening for you in the present, move towards grounded presence, and gently begin to shift patterns that have become stuck or fixed within your body, mind and your relations with others. I apply an intersectional, feminist lens that acknowledges systemic harms and the ways our rapidly changing world is deeply impacting our capacity for connection and mutuality.

more about me and my approach

I believe that aligning with the wisdom of our bodies is integral to healing. Our life experiences and traumas can make reaching for this alignment complex and difficult at times. I bring over two decades of experience working with embodiment, combining somatic approaches and relational Gestalt therapy to invite a re-connection to self.

I am in my 5th and final year of advanced, clinical study at the Gestalt Institute of Toronto, and am a member of the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapy. I have additional training in body-based modalities that support resolving trauma symptoms and stress-related disorders using neuroscience and polyvagal theory (Somatic Experiencing®, Movement for Trauma). In addition to talking and reflection, my approach to therapy incorporates experiential techniques, such as parts work, drawing, movement and other forms of embodied non-verbal expression. My MA thesis at York University straddled disciplines to explore practices of embodied, sensory attunement and the importance of fostering sensuous modes of attention to move towards collective flourishing. You can read more about the modalities I use in my therapy practice, education and training below.

  • Gestalt therapy focuses on expanding self-awareness to move from fixed, often painful patterns, into greater aliveness and a more fluid and flexible way of relating and moving in the world. Gestalt considers our symptoms as ‘creative adjustments’; ways our systems adapted skillfully and coherently to survive our most challenging circumstances. Rather than attempting to simply ‘correct’ symptoms, we can explore these fixed patterns through deepening awareness, meaningful contact, and the attuned, compassionate presence of the therapist. We may use movement, breath, drawing and gesture alongside thinking and talking. Exploring your process, as it unfolds moment to moment at your pace, is at the core of my practice and approach.

Gestalt therapy originated in Germany in the 1930’s by psychoanalysts, Fritz and Laura Perls. After fleeing Germany for South Africa, the couple eventually landed in New York City, where they wrote the first book on their new therapeutic modality with writer and Gestalt therapist Paul Goodman. Gestalt theory is a rich tapestry that integrates psychology, philosophical thought, body process, spontaneity, experimentation, and a more recent relational turn. Relational Gestalt is a responsive and impactful form of therapy that acknowledges the whole person, the co-created relationship with the therapist and the, in the moment, situation of the therapy itself.

  • Gestalt therapy works with body process to deepen understanding and explore emergent meanings. At the Gestalt Institute, we receive seminars in embodiment and its applications to psychotherapy from Shan Qi, Michael Clemmens and Ruella Frank, among others.

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-based, clinical model developed by Dr. Peter Levine. SE aims to resolve the physiological impacts of stress, shock and trauma that can accumulate in the body and in our nervous system responses. SE can assist us in gently moving out of fixed states of the nervous system response, including fight, flight, freeze and fawn, towards more fluid resiliency. SE can be used to support the resolution of PTSD, developmental attachment trauma and shock trauma events. SE is a “multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics and has been clinically applied for more than four decades”.

Movement for Trauma, developed by Jane Clapp integrates poly-vagal theory, nervous system support and physiology to explore how trauma lives in the body and can be explored and supported by somatic practitioners. The course covers hyper-mobility and anxiety, body armouring, fascial systems and tensegrity, the core system, and breathing mechanics to explore resourcing and support for clients living with the impacts of trauma.

  • Somatics is a broad umbrella term that encompasses many practices, contexts and frameworks to explore working with the body. Somatics does not just include ways of working with trauma physiology. We can also use somatics to explore bodily expression, creativity, spiritual connection, connection to the more-than-human world and transcendence, among other things! I bring my background in somatic practices in dance in conversation with clinical approaches to embodiment through the frameworks of Gestalt Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, & Movement for Trauma.
